Jess Otter

Autism Family Project

When our son, Jacob, was diagnosed autistic at 2 years old, we didn’t know any other families on the same journey. It became very isolating, and our circle of support started dwindling. However when we discovered and were able to connect with other autism families online, and then eventually in person, we were able to grow our circle of support again.

Connecting with other autism families has been a lifeline to our family, an avenue where we can share the wins as well as the struggles without judgement or shame. It has now become my life’s purpose to create that network of support for other autism families.

ARFID Project

Like many families of children with ARFID, I spent years being told that my son Kurtis would grow out of his ‘fussy eating’. It wasn’t until about age 5 that a pediatrician at a Child Development Service diagnosed him with ARFID. 6 Years later, I continue to have to teach GPs and other specialists about ARFID and its symptoms, with many having never heard of it, let alone knowing how to treat it. Raising awareness and supporting other families is of greatest importance to me.

Auslan Project

I was raised within the Deaf community by my Deaf parents. My first language is Auslan, and I have been immersed in both the Deaf and hearing worlds my whole life. Graduating high school led me straight into the interpreting profession where I work both with the community and education system. There is a current gap in available Auslan resources for both the Deaf and hearing. My purpose is to bridge this gap and support anyone using Auslan for a more inclusive world.

LGBT+ Project

Despite strides in social justice in recent years, LGBTQIA+ people and communities are left behind again and again. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I feel it important to rally support for established support organisations to strengthen their great services and contribute to the wellbeing and championing of LGBTQIA+ individuals across the nation.
